About this car

This 2003 BMW 540i sedan was purchased new by Steely Dan co-founder Walter Becker and is said to have remained in a Manhattan garage from 2006 until his death in 2017. It is finished in Jet Black over black leather and is powered by a 4.4-liter M62 V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Additional equipment includes a sunroof, xenon headlights, 18″ Style 32 alloy wheels, heated front seats, a CD stereo, a heated steering wheel, and automatic climate control.

The car is finished in Jet Black and features xenon headlights, an electric sunroof, and fog lights. The hood and rear bumper cover have been repainted. The sunroof mechanism was cleaned and lubricated, and the trunk struts were replaced in August 2026. Scrapes are visible on the underside of the front lip.

A set of 18″ Style 32 alloy wheels was fitted under current ownership, and the wheels are mounted with Continental ExtremeContact tires. The car is equipped with Dynamic Stability Control, and braking is handled by four-wheel ventilated discs. The brake hoses were replaced, and the brake and power-steering fluids were changed in August 2026.

The cabin features heated power-adjustable front seats trimmed in black leather along with matching door panel inserts. Amenities include a CD stereo, folding rear seats, automatic climate control, cruise control, and driver-seat position memory settings. A BlueBus Bluetooth module was installed in August 2026.

The heated leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel frames a 155-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for coolant temperature, fuel economy, and fuel level. The digital odometer indicates 18k miles, approximately 500 of which were added during current ownership.
