This 1949 Packard Standard Eight is a station sedan that was refurbished under previous ownership and is refinished in green with wood trim over tan cloth and vinyl. The car is powered by a 288ci inline-eight linked to a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and equipment includes a hood ornament, rear fender skirts, 15″ steel wheels with covers, independent front and leaf-spring rear suspension, front and rear bench seats, an electric clock, a push-button radio, a heater, and a woodgrain-style dashboard.
Based on the Standard Eight sedan, the cars were offered exclusively in a two-row seating configuration and featured steel bodywork with an extended roof panel as well as a wood clamshell tailgate and ash wood paneling on the doors and bodysides. This example was refinished in green and exterior details include sealed-beam headlights, a split windshield, a cormorant hood ornament, rear fender skirts, and chrome trim and wrap-around bumpers. There are some imperfections in the paint finish, the radio antenna has a bend, overspray is visible on the passenger-side rear vent window, and wear is present on the exterior woodwork, including separation and bubbling on the passenger-side door panel.
The 15″ steel wheels wear covers and are mounted with whitewall tires. The 23rd Series Standard Eight rode on a 120″ wheelbase and featured a coil-sprung independent front suspension as well as a live rear axle with leaf springs and tube shocks. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel hydraulic drums.
The front and rear benches are reupholstered in tan vinyl with cloth inserts and are accented by color-coordinated door panels and a woodgrain-style dashboard. Interior appointments include a locking glovebox with an integrated electric clock, a push-button radio, a heater, and recessed rear cabin footrests. Weathering is noted on top of the dashboard, and sometimes the radio buttons do not fully engage.
The two-spoke steering wheel features a bright semi-circular horn ring and frames a 110-mph speedometer, a clock, an ammeter, and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 55k miles, approximately 200 of which were added under current ownership.
